The Picos de Europa is a National Park situated in the autonomous regions of Asturia, Cantabria
and Castilla y Leon of Northern Spain, 80km West of Santander. It
contains three mountain ranges reaching 2646m (Torrecorredo) separated
by deep river gorges. It has a unique quality combining dramatic
mountain scenery, rare wildlife and flora and a culture based on low
intensity farming. The park is ideal for a youth expedition as
it combines trekking through its rugged terrain, climbing its steep
cliffs, exploring its river gorges, discovering its wildlife and
experiencing the culture of traditional mountain communities to
provide the medium for challenge, self learning, self reliance and
enjoyment amongst the participants.
We have created a 6 day programme which is
available in full upon request, here is a summary:
Day One: Fly to Santander in Northern Spain. Coach to
our village base with chalet accommodation.
Day Two: An early morning trip on the
Fuenta De cable car rises
800m in a single sweep to the El Cable area and access to the Horcada de
Covarrobres (Col at 1925m) with dramatic views to the Central and
Eastern Massifs. A 12.5 km walk through tremendous mountain scenery
enables us to look at navigation skills, mountain flora and fauna and
finish at the mountain village of Sotres.
Day Three:
Rock Climbing and Abseiling at a single pitch crag near to our chalet
base.
Day Four and Five: A two
day overnight trekking expedition to a high mountain refuge at the foot
of Spains most famous mountain, Naranjo de Bulnes. The first day will
see participants trek 8 km with over 1200m of ascent, carrying overnight
kit. A meal will be served in the refuge followed by an early night in
communal sleeping quarters. After an Alpine breakfast the expedition
will head down towards the mountain village of Sotres and be taken by
coach back to base for a celebration meal.
Day 6: Return to UK base
via coach and plane.
Numbers: We can run the
expedition for groups of upto 35 people.
Expedition Safety: The safety
and well being of all participants will be of the utmost priority during
the visit and all reasonable precautions will be taken to minimise the
risks involved, especially where adventurous activities are undertaken.
By definition adventurous expeditions such as this always carry an
element of risk. By using highly experienced and qualified instructors
we will be able to manage that risk but never remove it. Clients should
be aware that there is a danger of injury or loss of life that can never
be completely removed. The expedition will have a specific Child
Protection Policy. A copy of this is available upon request. The
expedition will have an emergency action plan for both urban and remote
settings and leaders will carry sufficient communications equipment to
ensure that they are able to activate that procedure if required. We
will have sufficient staff to ensure that two of our team will be either
at base or in the support vehicle during the expedition to provide
emergency and logistical assistance. Bi-lingual staff will be available
throughout the trip. The insurance for the expedition will cover
repatriation to the UK in the event of any major incident.
Staff: We have a team of
professional Mountain Instructors and International Leaders who will
travel from the UK as well as Spanish Mountain Leaders who will join the
expedition in the Picos. All of our staff have a track record of working
with young people, are police checked and full details will be provided
to you within our proposal.
Pre expedition Meeting:
Included within the cost of the expedition is a training day at your
base. Parents and group leaders are welcome to attend to ask questions
to assist in preparations for the trip.
